I am a landscape and still life painter who paints from direct observation. My landscapes mostly focus on urban New Haven and coastal Maine. I have spent considerable time painting in Italy which has been an important influence. Whatever the motif, light and color are at the heart of the work, and the challenge is to create a sense of place that speaks beyond the physicality of the paint.
Among the many painters I admire and who have influenced my work, the standouts are Edward Hopper, John Baptiste Corot and Giorgio Morandi.
